The prefix “vict” comes from the Latin root word vict,
meaning “conquer.” It is related to the root word vinc.
This is where we get the word victim from. The definition

cheated, as by his or her own emotions or ignorance, by the dishonesty of others, or by some impersonal
agency” or “a person or animal sacrificed or regarded as sacrificed”.
